Top 10 Pictures from 2016

A lot of images I create don't reach the internet mainly because I feel they are personal to the person they are created for, so here's a small glimpse into some of the works I create for the wonderful people in my life. Left to right from the top left here's the run down:

  1. Art Swap - - Run by Kalee Jackson this was my portrait entry into the artswap for 2016 based on the information given by the swap - next on is June/July this year - check it out!
  2. Anniversary - An slightly crazy but fun anniversary card for my wife.
  3. Birthday invite for my Zoe and Olivia, based on their suggestions of what should be included
  4. Rockin' dude - Unfortunately not coloured at the time of the birthday but sent and coloured recently i was really happy with how the 'flame hair' turned out on this.
  5. Kabuki - A cowgirl samurai idea based on David Mack's "Kabuki" is an inspirational set of graphic Novels (they are so cool i don't think calling them 'comic books' does them justice :)) Kabuki recently had it's 20th anniversary so it seemed like a good time to finally finish this piece.
  6. Gemini - For my sister Gillian - The idea that no matter what you're feeling life throws struggles at you and you will have to fight for what you want out of life.
  7. Kate - A starry bright image for for a bright and talented young lady.
  8. Dad - Based 1960's NZ motorbike racer Hugh Anderson and to encompass Dad's love of motorbike racing.
  9. Tom - Incorporating Tom's love of BMX for his birthday. Sometimes i like to include myself in the picture so note the Red Robin being bumped by his helmet :)
  10. Donna - A birthday card for our lovely playcentre friend Donna and my first attempt at a picture including Maori symbolism.

I hope you've enjoyed them and I look forward to sharing more in 2017.

Retro post - Kali the goddess!

Found this little gem from four years ago that I created a for an Olympics themed team building exercise at work.

Our team was India and we wanted to have a fierce figurehead for our team and after choosing Kali I whipped up this little image, still really happy with it four years on, I remember really enjoying doing all of the arms though next time I might do it a bit more with the objects she is supposed to be holding.

In this case of course they were switched out for the Olympic rings and we printed them on t-shirts :)

Want to learn how to become a supervillain? Then you've come to the right place!

Mark Andrew Smith, Armand Villavert and Matthew Weldon have crafted a fabulous set of all-ages stories around supervillains and their adventures in:

'Gladstones School for World Conquerors' Book 1: 'Villany 101'
'Gladstones School for World Conquerors' Book 2: 'In the Shadow of Shiran'

Their project is up here on Kickstarter and there's only 4 days to go to get your hands on these and you can even get your hands on the awesome 'New Brighton Archeological Society' books 1 & 2 as well!

You can get a preview of the books online at the Kickstarter link below:

Here's a quick drawing I've done to help promote the 'Gladstones' of three of the main characters, Kid Nefarious, Mummy Girl and Martian Jones.

Daily Draw February

Weekly Draw February
Well it is supposed to be ‘Daily Draw February’ and so far I’m managing that, it’s just not ‘daily upload February’ so it’s going to be ‘Weekly Draw February’ with 5 days of drawing and two of tidy up and publish per week J.
Day 1 – Mirror Mirror
After camping for a week in a remote location with limited facilities you really begin to appreciate what life is all about and how simple it can be, but it wasn’t till we returned to ‘civilisation’ that I realised just how you can be affected by something as simple as a  mirror.
You’ll stop, look at yourself, check yourself over for what – imperfections? Judge yourself on the way you look? Or just plain have a smile at how good looking you are? Wow, are we really that critical/vain?
Not having a mirror for a week actually showed me that yes personal appearance is important for self esteem but so is being happy with who you are and the life you have without have to have an external source of reference, and so I created these rhymes about the ‘Mirror, Mirror on the wall’.

Day 2 – Roses are Red
I can’t believe I’d even forgotten the bit past ‘Violets are blue so I had to look it up. How bad is that! But in doing so I found some interesting pointers to the origins of the apparently now commercialised ‘Valentines’ style rhyme from something that I felt had a bit more meaning. So after a slightly rambling start I managed to recraft it into more of it’s original style, which was quite fun.

Day 3 – Jack and Jill and the Beanstalk
Following on – as one’s mind is want to do – the nursery rhyme track, I decided to crossover Jack and Jill with ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and rather enjoyed trying to fit the two together with the main thrust being the beanstalk coming out of the well. J
Day 4 – Foxy
A cross between J Scott Campbell and Erika Pearce. I’ve wanted to try this since I saw Ericka’s awesome pieces with animals and people. The face turned out J Scott Campbell style someone and I image her being a redhead of course.

Day 5 – In the Mind
Sometimes the easiest way to find something to draw is un-focus yourself and see what the pencil will do, it usually ends up a bit weird as evidenced here but it’s still fun.

Rally Mark, Rally Hockey?

I had a crazy idea for my newest and latest Rally Mark pic to combine his love of two of his favourite sports, rally driving and Ice Hockey and here's the wacky result, of course everyone would have to play in cars and Brownie is sure to be helping RM too :)

There is indeed more to come of Rally Mark this year too :)

#InkTober Day 6 -

A little late I know but I thought I should follow up on what I'd started last year seeing as I'd completed some more but not posted them. Here's an interesting little fella, kinda reminds me of the Four Square guy with a bit of a morph.

I'll be posting some more stuff soon and it should be fun!
